"Afternoon tea"

Afternoon tea is meant to be a special treat but unfortunately my friends and I were really disappointed with our recent visit. It wasn't a relaxing experience as we constantly had to chase the staff. Even the basics of tea and coffee - they didn't arrive until after the food had been with us for a while. The food wasn't to the standard you would expect at all. The cakes weren't very nice, the flapjack stodgy and the addition of childlike homemade biscuits with a blob of jam was most bizarre - not the fancy cakes you'd expect. I ordered 2 children's afternoon teas which were awful quite frankly. They received nothing foodwise which was listed on the website - the kids got the same as the adults. There were no doughnuts, fruit skewers or cake pops as advertised - they got the same dry hard fruit scone that the adults were subjected to. The milkshake arrived after continuous chasing for an hour and we never did get the teapot of squash. Worryingly when I asked yet again for the squash as advertised, the waitress brought two glasses in. Luckily she asked who they were for because she'd actually brought two cocktails which were called squashies. This could have been a big issue had the children drank them and to make matters worse we were even charged for them! It wasn't at all busy so I'm unsure why the afternoon tea was so dire. On a positive note, I can say that the waitresses were very polite and courteous to us and they without prompting from us, removed the service charge from our bill. I think they realised that the afternoon tea was a disaster. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'm far from a snob but afternoon tea is meant to be a delightful experience and this fell far short.
