"Service, wine and ambience lovely but food disappointing."

The Feathers restaurant has a warm, welcoming feel to it - slightly old fashioned but definitely in a good way, with polished dark wood tables, comfy upholstered chairs, gleaming glasses and cutlery and lovely white napkins. The lady who served us was lovely, and our food arrived in very good time.

However, we were all disappointed with the food. The cauliflower fritters were doughy, greasy and just not very tasty, and the bland spinach pistou did nothing to help. The ''crispy smoked paprika brie' turned out to be phyllo pastry parcels which arrived swimming in oil. The bean and lentil roast was dry and tasteless, with not enough veloute. The duck breast was accompanied by the heftiest chunks of potato we'd ever seen, and was swimming in an unpleasantly watery sauce. The trout fillet was overcooked and perched atop a bed of very tough greens.

In addition, the food just didn't look very good. It was all very brown and beige with no real attempt to add colour to the plate and make it look appetising and there were very few vegetables apart from potatoes. We quite expected a bowl of veg to arrive for the table, but nothing turned up.

If the food had matched up to the quality furnishings and the excellent service, we would have been very happy.
