The Talbot Country House Hotel, Malton

"Disappointment!"
Dinner was a disaster for me- but my husband fared much better with his trout, followed by good fish and chips. My starter of scallops was not the best- but my main course of stone bass was a disaster. Both courses overly laden with greens. Billed as ‘stone bass on a seafood broth’- i imagined a delicate dish. However, the fish was so dry it had a thick brown ‘skin’ on the bottom as well as the skin on the top. I couldn’t scrape more than a couple of mouthfuls of fish to eat. It was so horribly dry. When asked how my main course had been by a very pleasant member of staff- I showed her the fish. She apologised but she came back and said the chef told her that he would not let it leave the kitchen in that state!!! Well- he did. We were charged the full £23 so cancelled the next evening’s dinner reservation.
We booked this hotel because we thought it was Foodie Heaven. Nothing could be further from the truth for dinner. A great pity because the staff are really pleasant. Breakfast was really good.
