"More pub grub than fine dining "

We booked for dinner on the first night of our two nights at the lovely Talbot. Make no mistake, we really enjoyed our stay; the ambience (slightly frayed Georgian elegance and not an all stuffy) and friendly but professional staff, lead by Martin Vaughan. Breakfast excellent, light lunch delicious but slightly underwhelmed by dinner. We ate in the bar, which had more atmosphere than the dining room and where we could take our dog. Service was attentive. The menu, however, was no more exciting than we see in our local pub-company village pub. Perhaps because The Talbot is part of a larger hotel chain?
My risotto was grossly over-salted and my wife’s fish undercooked; both dishes were replaced without quibble and their replacements appeared with a complimentary portion of chips; l also received an unsolicited apology from Martin the next morning.
In spite of my review, we really enjoyed our stay and will return. Just a pity that our meal didn’t do justice to The Talbot’s past reputation.
