The Talbot Country House Hotel, Malton

"Comfortable hotel with excellent staff but badly let down by its kitchen"

We stayed on the Talbot for two nights in one of the classic rooms with breakfast included, a birthday treat for my wife. The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. Also must say that most of the staff were exceptional throughout our stay however, the food coming out of the kitchen was really poor. We had booked dinner in the restaurant our first night and what a disappointment that was. I ordered the soup of the day to start, Pea and mint. Looked ok but tasted very bland hence I left it and told the waitress. She said she would "inform the kitchen" but I heard nothing more and was still charged for the soup. We both ordered Chicken Supreme for our main course but what arrived was chicken breast smothered in a brown gravy with mushrooms!! Tasted ok and we were really hungry, we didn't fancy waiting for the kitchen to try again so we ate but did tell the waitress it was the strangest chicken supreme we had ever seen!! She made a few sympathetic noises but there was nothing offered by means of compensation, and we heard no more. The cooked breakfasts we had the next two mornings were not great by any standard. Disappointing experience.
