The Swan Hotel, Wells

"Review of the restaurant Sunday Lunch."

Friendly staff - 4 stars.
Pleasant but unimaginative dining room - 3.5 stars!
Very good selection of, and very well cooked, vegetables - 5 stars.
So why 3 stars overall?
Because the 'star' of our Sunday lunch should have been the roast meats. My wife's pork had plenty of fat and very little crackling. My beef was topside (not the striploin indicated on the website menu). And like all topside I have ever eaten, it was rather dry and lacking in flavour. Moreover despite asking for rare in the hope of at least getting medium/pink, it was "well" done which in my book means overdone! The only desert that interested us was the crumble but this proved not to be available! We have eaten Sunday lunch at The Swan's sister hotel in Ledbury which has a much nicer and buzzier dining room and excellent sirloin beef served just as requested. So here in Wells and for only a slightly higher cost, we much prefer the Olive Tree next door which has good crackling on their succulent pork and mouth-watering sirloin beef, again served as requested... as well as much more interesting starters and deserts.
