"Mixed"

A mixed experience at my favourite hotel in my favourite city. The first two courses were delicious. Several items on the dessert menu were unavailable however. Given we were almost the only diners these items must have been off the menu prior to us dining. Also we couldn’t have either of the bottles of red we’d ordered as a corkscrew could not be located anywhere on the premises so screw top it was. The dining room appeared somewhat soulless this year- fewer festive decorations than in previous years and our table was too big for four of us. Maybe my expectations of this hotel were too high? On the plus side the log fire smelt lovely and the sole front of house person could not have been more helpful- nor more embarrassed as he had to keep coming back to offer us alternatives. The dessert I eventually had (sticky toffee) was dry and had been reheated I think. Hey ho.
