The Swan Hotel, Wells
Margaret Connolly
"Nice overnight stop in beautiful Wells"
A last minute booking that was a fortunate choice. The hotel must once have been a very characterful coaching inn and there are signs that an effort has been made to conserve its charm eg the old fire buckets on the stairs, and the carvings in the dining room. Modernising the public rooms has not really worked out particularly well. However, our bedroom, though small, was comfortable and warm, with a welcome Reading light, all too often missing in dimly lit hotel rooms. We had dinner at the hotel. My husband enjoyed his steak, which is a good thing as he had to wait 50 minutes for it to appear, and I had a light meal of the scampi, not a fortunate choice as it was dried up and there was little content to it. I also had the beetroot humus and focaccia which was better. In the bedroom, our double bed seemed only to have a single duvet on,, so that was a bit sad. Breakfast was quite nice. I had a yogurt and a couple of pieces of whole meal toast with honey, which I enjoyed. There was an appropriate level of understanding of food intolerances. The waitress at dinner was excellent and really tried hard to get things right. The staff in general were pleasant and helpful. We would stay again, though would probably have dinner somewhere else.
