The Swan Hotel, Wells

"Completely unsatisfactory dining experience"

Festive menu booked 4 weeks in advance for 4 adults with menu choices provided. On the night 4 x Main course Turkey not available; 3 x substitute main course served cold ; steak meal x 1 provided as substitute was poor to say the least - gristle on ends of steak, pepper sauce was like gravy, chips overcooked, a very tiny portion of vegetables. Very poor service at table where waiters had to be chased over a long period to serve the dessert of Christmas pudding. 10 per cent service charge added to entire bill which was not discretionary. Desserts were provided free of charge because of there being no turkey. We live in Blagdon and we had friends staying with us so I thought it would be a nice idea to take them to the Swan Hotel for a festive evening meal. How wrong I was to do that because the hotel could not even provide the festive menu which had been ordered with four weeks notice. The service from the male waiters was simply terrible with one of them just making inane comments. It should be said that the lady waitress however was very helpful and kind. An experience never to be repeated as it proved to be such a bad night for all of us.
